Kevin Anker
Born in Wausau, Wisconsin, and raised in Indianapolis, pianist, B3 organist, and keyboardist Kevin Anker discovered his passion for music at an early age. Inspired by watching his older brother’s piano lessons, he began his own studies at age five. During his teenage years, his tastes shifted toward blues and rock, though his father’s jazz collection—specifically the artistry of Oscar Peterson—left a lasting impression. Alongside the influence of Jimi Hendrix, these sounds opened the door to a wide range of styles, leading him to draw deep inspiration from Ray Charles, Otis Spann, Professor Longhair, and Rev. Charles Hodges.
After graduating from North Central High School, Anker was mentored by prominent Indianapolis musicians, including Harvey Cook, Lester Johnson, “Mad” Harold Cardwell, and Charles “Chuckie” Bush. During this period, he performed with groups such as Harvey and the Bluetones and collaborated closely with Gregg Bacon. In the early 1990s, his connection with Bacon led to a twenty-year partnership with the late neo-soul/jazz vocalist Cynthia Layne.
Around the same time, he co-founded the influential but largely overlooked funk-rock band All Day Suckas. Serving as the group's bassist while simultaneously establishing himself as a jazz keyboardist, he would later draw on his experience with the electric bass to define his unique, rhythmic approach to playing organ bass lines.
In the late 1990s, Anker formed a pivotal musical partnership with soul-blues artist Tad Robinson. This collaboration led to an extensive tenure with Maryland-based Severn Records, beginning in the mid-2000s, during which he served as a session musician, songwriter, and producer. A career milestone occurred during the sessions for Robinson’s 2019 album, Real Street, recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis. Recording in this "holy ground" of soul music, Anker worked alongside two of his primary influences: the Hi Rhythm Section’s Rev. Charles Hodges and Leroy Hodges.
Touring extensively across the United States, Canada, and Europe with Robinson and the Severn Soul Revue, Anker has collaborated with a "who's who" of blues and soul icons, including Delbert McClinton, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Seth Walker, Darrell Nulisch, Johnny Rawls, and Lou Pride. Locally, his prolific recording credits include work with Gordon Bonham, The Blue Side, and The Why Store.
Beyond the stage and studio, Anker is a respected authority in music technology. He is the author of several volumes in the Apple Pro Training Series (Peachpit Press), widely regarded as the definitive guides to Logic Pro production software. He is also recognized globally as an Official Hammond Organ Artist.
