Jazz at the Center: “The Latin Tinge” Brought the Heat to Close the Summer Series

On Thursday, August 21, 2025, the Jazz at the Center series wrapped up its summer run with an electrifying finale. Presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and Indy Jazz Fest, Pavel & Direct Contact’s The Latin Tinge transformed the evening into a full-scale celebration of Afro-Caribbean rhythm, culture, and community. With dazzling performances, vibrant dance exhibitions, and a lineup of Latin All-Stars representing Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the U.S., the night pulsed with energy from start to finish.

A Global Lineup, Rooted in Indy

At the heart of the evening was pianist Pavel Polanco-Safadit (Dominican Republic), whose band Direct Contact set the foundation for a high-energy musical journey across the Caribbean. They were joined by an incredible roster of artists, including Leah Crane (USA), Juan Manuel (Peru), David Lugo (Puerto Rico), Jacob Smith (USA), Amado Velázquez (Puerto Rico), Barbie Laboy (Puerto Rico), Jose Febres (Puerto Rico), Maikel David (Venezuela), and Sones Latino Y Los Chinelos.

Adding depth and dimension were Indy heavy-hitters: Steve Dokken (bass), Keith Cozart (drums), David Allee (percussion), Rich Cohen (sax), Rob Dixon (sax), Rich Dole (trombone), and Ed Zlaty (trumpet)—all of whom elevated the sound with their artistry and improvisation.

The result was a vibrant, multicultural collaboration that highlighted the diverse talent within Indianapolis’s own music community while paying homage to the rich traditions of Latin jazz.

Music, Movement, and Connection

More than a concert, The Latin Tinge was a full-body experience. Featured dance exhibitions and audience dance lessons turned the event into a shared celebration where the line between stage and crowd blurred. Couples twirled, families clapped along, and even first-time salsa dancers joined the floor, swept up by the irresistible grooves.

The setlist spanned across genres and borders—merengue, salsa, bachata, cumbia, and Afro-Caribbean jazz—blended seamlessly with American-infused beats. Each tune carried its own flavor: fiery brass exchanges, intricate percussion layers, and soulful vocal deliveries that transported the audience straight into the heart of the Caribbean.

Highlights of the Night

  • A soaring piano solo by Pavel Polanco-Safadit that showcased his signature mix of technical brilliance and joyful spirit.

  • A powerhouse vocal feature from Barbie Laboy, whose voice lit up the amphitheater.

  • A conga-driven jam led by David Lugo, which had the crowd clapping in time.

  • Special cameos from members of Grupo Bembe and 317 Proyecto, who added even more depth to the already star-studded evening.

By the time the full ensemble launched into the closing number, the atmosphere was electric—an open-air dance party that left no one standing still.

A Fitting Finale

As the last notes rang out and the crowd responded with cheers, dancing, and standing ovations, it was clear The Latin Tinge had achieved something special. The event wasn’t just about music—it was about connection, culture, and joy.

The third and final concert of the Jazz at the Center 2025 season embodied the Foundation’s mission: to preserve jazz, celebrate diversity, and bring people together through the power of live performance. With its blend of artistry, accessibility, and community spirit, the night closed the series on a high note—leaving audiences already looking forward to what’s next.
