Charlie & the Tropicales featuring Mireya Ramos - Indy Jazz Fest

  • The Jazz Kitchen 5377 North College Avenue Indianapolis, IN, 46220 United States (map)

Get ready for a musical time machine to a 1950s Caribbean hotel party —Charlie Halloran & The Tropicales deliver scorching tropical grooves with New Orleans soul. This dynamic ensemble blends the vintage swing of biguines and boleros with the syncopated rhythms of calypso, cumbia, and rocksteady, channeling music from Trinidad, Venezuela, Guadeloupe, and Cuba. Fueled by infectious energy, their shows are equal parts dance party, cultural celebration, and sonic adventure.

Since 2024, the band has featured GRAMMY-winning vocalist and violinist Mireya Ramos (founder of Flor de Toloache), whose bold voice and soulful style add a fresh layer to The Tropicales’ already deep catalog. Together, they bring Ramos’ original boleros and rancheras into the fold, alongside lush takes on classic Caribbean melodies and reimagined New Orleans tunes. Their chemistry has ignited stages from Jazz Fest and Tipitina’s to NYC’s Arthur’s Tavern and Bar LunÀtico.

Their latest album, Jump Up (NuTone Recordings), showcases collaborations with Cyrille Aimée, Drew Gonsalves, and Quiana Lynell—featuring a globe-trotting mix of calypsos, R&B, and Latin dance rhythms. It follows Shake the Rum, which earned acclaim for its breezy, analog authenticity and sun-soaked sound.

Whether they’re conjuring the spirit of a Trinidadian carnival or spinning a dreamy bolero drenched in brass, Charlie & The Tropicales bring a transportive live experience that melts borders—and the ice in your glass.
