The Infectious On-stage Energy of Jazz Vocalist Veronica Swift

Indy Jazz Fest 20203 Sunset Series

Indy Jazz Fest kicked off its 2023 season with two nights of the effervescent Veronica Swift in their Sunset Series of club shows in partnership with the beautiful Cabaret on September 18, 2023. Veronica recently performed at the Detroit Jazz Fest but there is nothing like seeing her in a smaller club setting.

Starting off the night with her own jazz take on some familiar tunes, Swift is currently on tour to promote her self-titled third album. The album, more commonly referred to as “TransGenre,” is a transformation of the music from jazz to classical, soul, and rock as she weaves her way through a setlist, putting her own stamp on some of the music of Queen, Jefferson Airplane, and The Dresden Dolls.

One of the Most Notable Jazz Singers

As one of the most notable jazz singers of her generation, Swift grew up with two musical parents and a life of the stage, perhaps most akin to Judy Garland, as she began her journey with Garland’s “I Was Born in a Trunk.” “The Show Must Go On,” “A Little Taste,” and “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” offered only previews of the journey ahead.

Swift shared two of her own original songs “A Room With A View” reflecting on her move from NY to LA and the debut of “Livin’ in a Coma” which will be on her next album of all original songs. But this was a night of many musical genres including “White Rabbit”, and “Sing” by the Dresden Dolls, “Ain’t That Peculiar” written by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and recorded by Marvin Gaye, “Get Tough” and Queen’s “Keep Yourself Alive.”

Swift’s on-stage energy was infectious as the show moved from jazz to rock and the crescendo encore “Don’t Rain On My Parade” - a fitting finale for this artist who is making her own mark on the music. Veronica's bandmates include Adam Klipple on piano and organ, Brian Viglione on drums, guitarist Gary Joseph Potter Jr and bassist Max Gerl. Be on the lookout for Swift's next album of all original music.
